Today we did an Old Testament tour of the area around the Old City. It was fascinating to see some of the sites we have all read about in the Bible with a real appreciation for the terrain in Jerusalem.
NOTHING is flat! And everything was uphill - both ways.
Probably the most fun event was to walk through the Hezikiah Tunnel. In some places it was very low and narrow.
Here are some pictures which may interest you.
Jaffa Gate, where we are staying and where the University is located.
Here is an Jewish graveyard with the Mount of Olives in the background. The most amazing
part of the picture is the tomb in the front which was hewn out of solid rock where it sits.
Here is an example of the conflict here in Israel.
The site of the "City of David" - Violence disguised as culture.
This is a picture of the Kidron Valley from the City of David. It is impossible to describe how far down this valley is and how sharply it drops off.
And finally a "royal throne" - a toilet unearthed in the City of David.
Mike, you must be exhausted!
ReplyDeleteAnyway, I enjoyed your shot of the Mount of Olives, and was immediately reminded of Zechariah 14... Jesus returns to the earth, with us in tow, and sets foot upon that very mountain, and it splits in two!
Blessings, Scott
Zechariah 14 (NIV)
The LORD Comes and Reigns
1. A day of the LORD is coming when your plunder will be divided among you. 2. I will gather all the nations to Jerusalem to fight against it; the city will be captured, the houses ransacked, and the women raped. Half of the city will go into exile, but the rest of the people will not be taken from the city.
3. Then the LORD will go out and fight against those nations, as he fights in the day of battle. 4. On that day his feet will stand on the Mount of Olives, east of Jerusalem, and the Mount of Olives will be split in two from east to west, forming a great valley, with half of the mountain moving north and half moving south. 5. You will flee by my mountain valley, for it will extend to Azel. You will flee as you fled from the earthquake [a] in the days of Uzziah king of Judah. Then the LORD my God will come, and all the holy ones with him.
"Up hill both ways" - you tried that line when we were kids. Didn't buy it then; definitely not buying it now. Great pictures! Keep posting.
ReplyDeleteHow awesome! Everything looks 'up hill both ways' to me :) Thank you for sharing these pictures.
